United States Strongman, Inc. is happy to have Dennis Walters as the Florida State Representative. Here is Dennis in his own words.
My introduction to Strongman was in 2001. I had gotten out of the Navy a few months before then and was out of shape and not happy with myself, so I joined a local Golds Gym in Lakeland, Florida. After a few months I started to become bored with just going to the gym, I had been watching Worlds Strongest Man on TV so I started looking around and found a small group over in Clearwater that trained every Saturday. That is where I met Tom Mitchell who I believe has been one of the greatest Ambassadors to the sport of Strongman in Florida. At that time we only had a few kegs, some farmers bars, a yoke and 2 tires. We would train running up and down the road dodging traffic or maybe I should say traffic was dodging us. My personal life ended up changing along with a new job and relocating further away so my training fell off for awhile. I moved back into the area in 2005 and started training with the Clearwater crew again. I did my first competion in 2006 which was located in Orlando, Fl. I ended up taking 4th place out of 22 guys in the novice class. I then helped Tom who was the State Chair for NAS with the next couple of completions that he orgamized and continued to train hard. My next competion was the 2007 State championship after a long grueling day running neck and neck with David Beers I missed first place by half a tire flip. Shortly after that competion I injured myself and had to take some time off from training and Strongman. During this time my personal life was shook up with a Divorce and relocation to Fort Myers for work. I continued to train in a gym but had gotten away from strongman when I can down here, a few years ago I was lucky enough to get hooked up with a few guys that competed in Strongman and Powerlifting. Since then we have been working to build Strongman in Southwest Florida. I look forward to serving as a Representative for the State of Florida and to continue to help to grow the United States Strongman, Inc.
and the Sport of Strongman.
